Garage Door Repair FAQ - Honolulu, HI

Honest answers to the questions we hear most. No sales pitch - just what you need to know.

How much does garage door repair cost in Honolulu?
Every job is different, so we quote on site after seeing what's going on. A roller or hinge swap is a smaller job. Spring replacement runs higher because the parts cost more and the work is dangerous if done wrong. A full opener replacement or new door installation is the biggest investment. What we can tell you upfront: we give a flat-rate number before any work starts, and that number is what you pay. Call us with what's happening and we can usually give you a ballpark over the phone.
How fast can you get here?
Most days we can be there same-day if you call in the morning. Afternoon calls usually get a next-morning slot. We give a 2-hour arrival window and text you when we're headed your way, so you're not sitting around all day waiting. After-hours emergencies are tougher to guarantee, but if your door is stuck open or won't close, call anyway. We'll work something out if there's a truck available.
Do you work on all garage door brands?
Yes. Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, CHI, LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie - we've seen all of them across Oahu. Parts availability depends on the model. The common stuff like standard torsion springs, rollers, cables, and LiftMaster openers, we carry on the truck. Older or less common models sometimes need a part ordered, which can add a day. We'll tell you upfront if that's the case so you know the full timeline before we start.
Is it worth repairing an old garage door or should I replace it?
If the door is under 15 years old and the panels are still straight and solid, repair almost always makes more sense. One bad spring or a worn-out opener doesn't mean the whole door needs to go. Where replacement starts making sense: rust eating through the panels, a door that's been hit hard enough to warp the frame, or different problems showing up every few months. In Hawaii, salt air speeds that timeline up, so a door that might last 20 years on the mainland may start showing its age around 12-15 here.
Do I need a permit for a new garage door in Honolulu?
For a standard residential replacement - same size opening, no structural changes - you typically don't need a building permit in Honolulu. The city treats it like a repair if the opening stays the same dimensions. If you're changing the opening size, widening it for a bigger door, or cutting a new opening entirely, that's a structural modification and you'll need a permit. We'll walk you through which category your job falls into during the estimate so there are no surprises later.
Why do garage doors break down faster in Hawaii?
Salt air. Honolulu sits right on the coast, and that ocean moisture carries salt particles that settle on every exposed metal surface. Springs, cables, hinges, roller bearings - they all corrode from the outside in. On the mainland, a standard torsion spring lasts 7-10 years. Here on Oahu, 4-6 years is more realistic depending on how close you are to the water. Homes in Hawaii Kai and along the windward coast tend to see it worst. We use galvanized and powder-coated parts rated for marine conditions. They last significantly longer in our climate.
Can I use my garage door with a broken spring?
You shouldn't. A standard residential garage door weighs between 130 and 200 pounds. The springs do the heavy lifting - literally. When one breaks, the full weight of the door drops onto the opener and tracks. If you try to use the door, your opener motor is straining against weight it wasn't designed for, which can burn it out. Worse, the door could drop suddenly if the remaining hardware gives. Keep the door closed, and if you need your car out, pull the emergency release cord and lift from the bottom carefully.
What should I do if my garage door is stuck open?
First, don't try to force it down. If a spring or cable broke while the door was going up, pulling it down can cause the door to free-fall or go off track. If you're comfortable with it, pull the red emergency release handle and try to lower the door slowly by hand with someone helping you. If it feels heavy or unbalanced, stop and leave it. Secure your garage as best you can, lock the interior door to your house, and call us. We can usually walk you through a temporary fix over the phone until we get there.
